CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Penelope studied Mr. Wilcox as he read Agnes’s letter. He seemed to be suffering the same mix of emotions that overcame her as she’d read it, though without the sentimentality she felt. When he was done, he set the letter down and stared off to the side in thought for one moment before turning to her.

“This does answer some questions for me. I would have never taken Miss Sterling as one to commit suicide. At least now I understand her insistence on changing the will earlier this week.”

“So you suspected murder as well.”

“Not so much that, but it was her desire that the will be read as soon as possible after her death. It is rather convenient that all the beneficiaries are here under the same roof.”

“It is,” Penelope agreed. “Which of them do you think did it?”

“That is something for the police to determine.” He gave Penelope a penetrating look, as though predicting she would argue, particularly after having read Agnes’s request in her letter.

“The same police who declared her death a suicide in the first place?” Penelope returned.

“The circumstances surrounding her death seem to have warranted it at the time. Trust me, I inquired. Even now, I can’t imagine how it could have been anything else.” He stroked his white mustache in thought. “Still, this is officially a police matter. Despite Miss Sterling’s request, you won’t find me condoning any layperson playing the detective. This isn’t a Sherlock Holmes novel, young lady, we are dealing with a possible murderer.”

Penelope realized it would be pointless to argue with him. Just because he wouldn’t support her in her efforts didn’t mean she wasn’t going to do exactly as Agnes had requested. Even if she hadn’t requested it, Penelope’s mind couldn’t help but go to work reconsidering all the suspects, something Agnes must have predicted would happen.

Mr. Wilcox studied her as though he knew exactly where her head was. “This letter is evidence. I intend to deliver it to the police.”

“Of course.” Penelope said indifferently. Every word was already etched into her memory. “But I’m going with you.”

She wasn’t about to let a bunch of flatfooted, obviously inept policemen handle this case and miss certain clues once again.

“I see no reason to hesitate,” she hinted.

He met her with a wry smile. “Neither do I.”
