CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Penelope studied Mr. Wilcox as he read Agnesâs letter. He seemed to be suffering the same mix of emotions that overcame her as sheâd read it, though without the sentimentality she felt. When he was done, he set the letter down and stared off to the side in thought for one moment before turning to her.
âThis does answer some questions for me. I would have never taken Miss Sterling as one to commit suicide. At least now I understand her insistence on changing the will earlier this week.â
âSo you suspected murder as well.â
âNot so much that, but it was her desire that the will be read as soon as possible after her death. It is rather convenient that all the beneficiaries are here under the same roof.â
âIt is,â Penelope agreed. âWhich of them do you think did it?â
âThat is something for the police to determine.â He gave Penelope a penetrating look, as though predicting she would argue, particularly after having read Agnesâs request in her letter.
âThe same police who declared her death a suicide in the first place?â Penelope returned.
âThe circumstances surrounding her death seem to have warranted it at the time. Trust me, I inquired. Even now, I canât imagine how it could have been anything else.â He stroked his white mustache in thought. âStill, this is officially a police matter. Despite Miss Sterlingâs request, you wonât find me condoning any layperson playing the detective. This isnât a Sherlock Holmes novel, young lady, we are dealing with a possible murderer.â
Penelope realized it would be pointless to argue with him. Just because he wouldnât support her in her efforts didnât mean she wasnât going to do exactly as Agnes had requested. Even if she hadnât requested it, Penelopeâs mind couldnât help but go to work reconsidering all the suspects, something Agnes must have predicted would happen.
Mr. Wilcox studied her as though he knew exactly where her head was. âThis letter is evidence. I intend to deliver it to the police.â
âOf course.â Penelope said indifferently. Every word was already etched into her memory. âBut Iâm going with you.â
She wasnât about to let a bunch of flatfooted, obviously inept policemen handle this case and miss certain clues once again.
âI see no reason to hesitate,â she hinted.
He met her with a wry smile. âNeither do I.â
